ÉQUATEUR PROVINCE

 Located in the central-north of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Équateur province consists mainly of plains and gentle plateaus near the tributaries of the Congo River. Coffee is cultivated at relatively low altitudes (500–1,200 meters), often on small family plots intercropped with cocoa, bananas, and other fruit trees. The climate is typically hot and humid, with abundant rainfall throughout the year, creating favourable conditions for Robusta coffee, which dominates in this area due to its resilience to low-altitude and humid conditions. Processing is mostly traditional—sun-drying on patios or on the ground—resulting in coffees with a heavy body, earthy undertones, and a marked bitterness. These characteristics make Équateur’s coffees suitable for blends and industrial uses.
