Taiz and the surrounding Haymah Dakhiliyyah area in Yemen’s southern highlands form an emerging centre of high-quality Arabica production, distinguished by their unique microclimates and increasingly recognized flavour signatures. Situated between 1,400 and 2,100 meters, the region is defined by steep, dramatic mountain slopes and pockets of moderate rainfall that provide slightly more moisture than the drier northern highlands. These conditions support slow cherry maturation and enhance the development of aromatic complexity, while traditional terraced farming continues to shape the landscape and agricultural practices.
Coffee from Taiz and Haymah Dakhiliyyah is known for its bright, fragrant cup profile. Floral and citrus notes are common, complemented by honeyed sweetness, medium body, and lively aromatics that set the region apart from the heavier, winey coffees of northern Yemen. Although still developing its global reputation, the area is producing an increasing number of specialty micro-lots as farmers adopt improved drying and sorting techniques. With its distinct southern highland character and growing emphasis on quality, Taiz/Haymah Dakhiliyyah is becoming one of Yemen’s most promising emerging specialty origins.
