CENTRAL HIGHLANDS
The Central Highlands of Burundi are an important coffee-growing area, producing high-quality Arabica Bourbon beans at 1,300–1,800 meters above sea level. The region benefits from fertile volcanic soils, moderate temperatures, and consistent rainfall, which support balanced cherry maturation and development of delicate flavours. The central highlands include regions; Gitega (Produces sweet, balanced coffees with tea-like qualities and mild acidity) and Muramvya (Known for clean, aromatic cups with subtle fruit and floral notes, often prized in specialty markets).
Coffee is mainly grown by smallholder farmers, typically under 0.3 hectares per farm. Farmers are organized into cooperatives that manage washing stations, using the fully washed process to ensure high quality and traceability. Coffees from the Central Highlands are mild, balanced, and elegant, often displaying tea-like qualities, gentle sweetness, and subtle floral or fruit notes.
The Central Highlands contribute significantly to Burundi’s specialty coffee production, offering approachable, balanced coffees that complement the fruity and vibrant profiles of the Northern Highlands and the full-bodied, complex cups of the Southern Highlands.
