CENTRAL AND EASTERN PROVINCES (LUNDAZI, PETAUKE)
Coffee production is not currently a major industry in Zambia's Central and Eastern provinces, as most production now comes from a large farm in the Northern Province. While there have been efforts to revive the coffee sector in recent years, the overall production in the country has significantly declined from previous highs.
Coffee cultivation in Zambia began in the 1950s, with production growing significantly in the 1980s before declining sharply after 2009. Today's production is minimal, mainly from a single large farm in the Northern Province; with overall annual output around 250 metric tons, a drastic drop from previous years. The Northern Province has been the historical focus for coffee research and is the source of most current production. Production in Central and Eastern provinces, including Lundazi and Petauke, is not a prominent feature of the current Zambian coffee industry. The Zambian government is promoting coffee production as a "green economy" initiative, encouraging small-scale farmers to engage in it again and planting shade trees alongside coffee to help mitigate climate change.
