NORTHERN PROVINCE (KASAMA, MBALA, AND NAKONDE)
Northern Province (including Kasama and Mbala) is the primary coffee-producing region in Zambia, accounting for 97% of the country's exportable coffee. The region's high altitudes, nutritious soil, and favorable climate with abundant rainfall are ideal for growing high-quality Arabica beans. Production is dominated by large-scale operations like the Northern Coffee Corporation (NCCL), which has estates in both Kasama and Mbala.
97% of Zambia's exportable coffee production is concentrated in the Northern Province. Northern Coffee Corporation (NCCL) (formerly Northern Coffee Company, owned by Olam International) is the primary producer, with multiple estates in Kasama and Mbala. The company's origin traces back to a World Bank project in the late 1970s. The region's high elevation (around 1,600 meters in Mbala) and climate are well-suited for growing Arabica coffee.
The area has nutritious soils and a climate that is moderate and receives ample rainfall, which is crucial for quality coffee. Coffee from the region is known for its smooth, balanced acidity, and notes of fruit, chocolate, and honey. While a smallholder sector exists, it has struggled with issues like fertilizer access and equipment, leading to lower production levels compared to the large estates. Some private investment is working to revive support for smallholder farmers in the area.
