NORTHERN HIGHLANDS (MISUKU HILLS, VIPHYA PLATEAU, AND NKHATA BAY HIGHLANDS)
The Northern Highlands of Malawi, encompassing the Misuku Hills and Viphya Plateau, is a prime coffee-growing region known for producing premium Arabica beans. Coffee from the Misuku Hills is often described as having floral and citrus notes, while the Viphya Plateau is noted for beans with bright acidity and a tea-like body. This area benefits from high altitude, ideal climate, and is a key focus for improving quality and farmer returns.
MISUKU HILLS: This area's coffee is characterized by its lush environment, producing beans with floral and citrus notes.
VIPHYA PLATEAU: Coffee grown here is recognized for its bright acidity and a tea-like body.
Processing often begins at the local association level, where farmers can use pulperies to separate beans from coffee pulp. The partially processed beans are then transported to the town of Mzuzu for secondary processing. Organizations like the Trust have worked to strengthen farmers by improving yields, quality, and financial returns, with farmers often receiving a large portion of the revenue.
