CENTRAL REGION
The Central Province of Rwanda, surrounding the capital Kigali, is a smaller coffee-producing area compared to the western, northern, and southern highlands. Coffee here is grown at moderate altitudes of 1,500–1,800 meters, benefiting from fertile volcanic soils and a stable equatorial climate. Central region districts include; Rwamagana (Produces coffees with balanced sweetness, mild acidity, and light fruity or floral notes, suitable for both local consumption and export), Kamonyi – Produces clean, gentle-flavoured Arabica beans, mainly from smallholder farms supplying regional cooperatives.
The region experiences consistent rainfall, moderate temperatures, and relatively fertile soils, allowing Arabica Bourbon to thrive. While the elevation is lower than in the northern and western highlands, careful cultivation and washing practices maintain good coffee quality. Coffee is mostly grown by smallholder farmers operating in cooperatives. Fully washed processing is standard, with cherries hand-picked and brought to nearby washing stations to ensure quality and traceability. Coffees from the Central Province are mild, balanced, and approachable, often displaying light citrus, floral, and chocolate notes, making them suitable for blends or everyday coffee.
The Central Province plays a supportive role in Rwanda’s coffee industry, producing clean, mild Arabica coffees that complement the fruity, vibrant, and complex profiles of the western, northern, and southern regions. While not a major export hub, it contributes to domestic supply and cooperative-driven specialty coffee initiatives.
