KARNATAKA
Karnataka is the largest and most important coffee-producing state in India, accounting for more than 70% of the country’s total output. The state’s coffee cultivation is concentrated in the Western Ghats, a mountain range known for its fertile, well-drained volcanic soils, abundant rainfall, and temperate climate—all of which create ideal conditions for high-quality coffee production. Key coffee-growing regions include Coorg (Kodagu), Chikmagalur, Hassan, and Dakshina Kannada, each with unique microclimates that influence bean quality and flavour profiles.
At higher elevations, ranging from 900 to 1,700 meters above sea level, Arabica coffee dominates, thriving under the cool, misty conditions and often grown beneath a canopy of shade trees, including silver oak, jackfruit, or native forest species. These conditions allow for slow maturation of coffee cherries, producing beans with complex flavours, balanced acidity, and pronounced sweetness. Arabica from Coorg, for example, are particularly celebrated for their mild acidity, full body, and rich, nutty, and chocolaty notes, making them highly sought after in both domestic and specialty international markets.
At lower elevations, Robusta coffee is more prevalent, as it is naturally more tolerant to heat and humidity. Robusta beans from Karnataka are typically stronger and more bitter, with higher caffeine content, and are widely used in espresso blends, instant coffee, and commercial-grade production.
Farms in Karnataka range from smallholder family plots to larger estates, many of which integrate sustainable and shade-grown practices, intercrop coffee with spices such as black pepper or cardamom and fruit trees. These methods not only enhance biodiversity but also improve soil fertility and coffee quality. Overall, Karnataka’s combination of altitude, climate, fertile soils, and traditional cultivation methods has established it as the flagship coffee region of India, producing beans that are recognized for their consistency, complexity, and distinctive flavour profiles.
