CENTRAL REGION (NKHOTAKOTA, NTCHISI)
The central region of Malawi, specifically Nkhotakota and Ntchisi, is a coffee-producing area, though it is not the dominant one. While the bulk of Malawi's coffee is grown in the southern regions, Ntchisi is noted as a suitable area for growing coffee, often under the shade of indigenous trees, and is home to a significant number of smallholder farms.
The central region, especially the area around Ntchisi and Nkhotakota, is identified as having ideal conditions for coffee production. Around 4,000 smallholder farms, each with fewer than 200 plants, are located in northern and central Malawi. Coffee grown in Ntchisi is noted for qualities like deep sweetness, fruitiness, and a rich body, often cultivated in harmony with nature under indigenous trees. Most coffee production in Malawi is concentrated in the southern regions like Mangochi, Mulanje, Zomba, and Thyolo, which have higher altitudes and warmer temperatures.
