Espíritu Santo Coffee: Gentle Brightness from Bolivia’s Yungas
Espíritu Santo coffee is cultivated in the Yungas valleys of La Paz, Bolivia, at altitudes between 1,000 and 2,000 meters. This high‑elevation environment produces Strictly Hard Bean (SHB) Arabica, known for its density and flavor complexity. Using the washed process, farmers highlight clarity and brightness in the cup.
The flavor profile is mild and round, with a smooth body and gentle tangy acidity. Subtle red fruit notes — berries, apple, or grape — mingle with a sweet finish of caramel or chocolate in medium roasts. This makes Espíritu Santo coffee approachable yet distinctive, ideal for those who enjoy balance with a touch of brightness.
Historically, Espíritu Santo was one of Bolivia’s celebrated coffee districts, alongside Caupalicam and Caranavi, with beans sought after in Europe during the 19th century. Today, smallholder farmers continue this tradition, sustaining livelihoods for thousands of families while preserving Bolivia’s coffee heritage.
